Inclusive Nationalism and Syncretic Culture

In the midst of the sectarian nationalism that we saw in an earlier section, we had some public figures who vouched for an inclusive nationalism and syncretic culture. We can say with some confidence that Sarojini Naidu is perhaps the most prominent woman of the freedom struggle. Her poetry and politics reflected the values and experiences she imbibed from her childhood. She remained an indefatigable champion of inclusive nationalism and syncretic culture till she died in 1949. She firmly believed that ‘It is the combined vision of all communities that will make a true focus of national vision.’ This is the topic of her speech included here.

Prafulla Chandra Ray is well known as a chemist and as a pioneer scientist but we know little about his other writings. He became a Gandhian later in life and got involved in the freedom struggle. Ray was not just a scientist, but had keen interest in the history of science. He wrote and spoke extensively about Indian history and civilization as well. He has been included here for his insightful comments on inclusive nationalism and syncretic culture.
